It was during the year of 1773 when the measurement of blood pressure was first published by the English clergyman Stephen Hales. Hypertension, as a disease, was first described in 1808 by Thomas Young, and especially by Richard Bright in 1836. Frederick Akbar Mahomed reported the first case of elevated blood pressure in a person without the evidence of kidney disease.
In 1925, the term ‘essential hypertension’ was introduced by Otto Frank to describe elevated blood pressure with unknown cause. Physicians from Mayo Clinic coined the term ‘malignant hypertension’ to describe a syndrome of very elevated blood pressure, severe retinopathy with adequate kidney function which resulted in death within a year due to complications from stroke, heart failure or kidney failure.
